Label TextWhen Chagall (1887-1985) lived in St. Petersburg, Paris, and Berlin before World War I he encountered Cubism, Symbolism, and Fauvism. The artist combined elements of each, along with distinctive Jewish imagery, drawn from life in his home village of Vitebsk. His bright, dreamlike work became immensely popular between the wars. Before gaining fame as a celebrity portrait photographer, Halsman, born Philipp Halsmann, was sentenced to ten years in prison for murdering his father. After a successful appeal, Halsman was acquitted in 1930, at which point he moved to Paris and changed the spelling of his name. The criminal case surrounding his father’s death was never solved.
