DescriptionSung dynasty; Ting ware. White ground, plain underneath with slightly raised design of elaborate birds and flowers and foliage inside.Label TextAs the demand for the elegant Ding ware increased during the Northern Song dynasty, efficient techniques were instituted to augment production. For example, incised motifs were increasingly replaced by dense mold-impressed designs. The designs were often inspired by the lively, stylized patterns seen on contemporary silk tapestries (kesi), embroideries and dishes of beaten silver. This bowl was first created on a wheel, beaten thin over a convex, hard-fired pottery mold and finished with six tiny rim indents to give it a floral form. The design is very similar to patterns seen on extant molds, as for example, a mold dated 1184, owned by the Percival David Foundation in London. Production of Ding whiteware continued at a reduced level at the Quyang kilns (Hebei province) after the kilns fell under the control of the Jin Tartars in 1127 and the Northern Song court fled south. Ding ware experienced its final decline in popularity in the 13th century, after the Mongol invasion in 1234.ProvenanceWilder D. Bancroft, Ithaca, N.Y.
