Noted as Chinese on list.Label TextThis rare flower-shaped dish, with fish cavorting among waves, has long been treasured even though it exemplifies some of the difficulties encountered by Jingdezhen kiln potters of the early to mid-14th century. The porcelain body was warped in the kiln despite being supported by the numerous spurs, the remnants of which are visible on the back. In addition, the experimental copper-red pigment of the painted design diffused, blurred and turned brownish red or burnt gray under the transparent, fluid, qingbai (“bluishwhite”) glaze, used here as an overglaze. By the middle-to late 14th century, a new, colorless transparent lime-alkali glaze made of special glaze stones that could both cover and preserve the definition of the painted decoration had replaced the qingbai glaze as an overglaze on Jingdezhen porcelains.ProvenanceWilder D.
