Label TextThis sparkling oil shows many elements reminiscent of Impressionist landscapes, in its subject matter and sense of light-filled atmosphere. At the same time, however, Matisse asserts the picture plane as a single, unreceding surface on which a number of competing but balancing patterns interrelate. The parquet floor, balustrade, rippled sea and distant hillside are equally active and visually assertive, and serve to deny the perspective recession which the mind tends to read in the composition.ProvenanceBourgeois Galleries, New York NY
