Label Text2005-08-25: PETIT INTÉRIEUR A LA TABLE DE MARBRE RONDE, PALMIÉR ET PERSONNAGE, 1947 Henri Matisse French, 1869-1954 Oil on canvas Gift of Chapin Riley, 2001.450 One of the most innovative and influential artists of the twentieth century, Matisse spent his career exploring the expressive potential of color and form. His goal was to use color to structure his paintings. This painting shows Matisse's love of pattern and decoration. Completed late in his career, it suggests the influence of his cutout paper technique, which he developed in the 1940s. By working with simple shapes, Matisse was able to focus on line and color simultaneously.ProvenanceGalerie de l'Art Moderne, Paris (A. Amante) October 24, 1949; to present owner Mr. Chapin Riley
