One of the most innovative and influential artists of the twentieth century, Matisse spent his career exploring the expressive potential of color and form. His goal was to use color to structure his paintings.
This painting shows Matisse's love of pattern and decoration. Completed late in his career, it suggests the influence of his cutout paper technique, which he developed in the 1940s. By working with simple shapes, Matisse was able to focus on line and color simultaneously.ProvenanceGalerie de l'Art Moderne, Paris (A.
