Label TextPart of a larger textile this Ottoman Turkish burial silk covered a false sarcophagus (sandukka) that was traditionally placed in the center of a polygonal mausoleum built over the burial place of a secular or religious dignitary. One of two known types differentiated by color and inscription, it uses the color green--a holy color in the Islamic tradition--and is inscribed with the Arabic sentence known as the Profession of Faith.
