Born in Boston, Coburn took up photography at the age of sixteen, encouraged by his cousin, F. Holland Day, a leader in the American Pictorialist School. Influenced by Whistler, the artist favored a soft-focus look which was in vogue. Coburn was a founding member of the Photo-Secession in America and was elected to the Linked Ring in Britain in 1903.
This image of the Palazzo Barbaro in Venice served as the frontispiece for Wings of the Dove, Volume II, in the 1909 edition of The Novels and Tales of Henry James. James gave Coburn specific ideas for subjects to illustrate his novels, and this was one of James' suggestions.
