Label TextOn his eighth birthday, Coburn received his first camera as a gift. He took it along when he traveled to Europe at age sixteen. There he met the American artist Edward Steichen (1879-1973) who was studying painting in Paris, and they began a lasting friendship. Coburn probably made this photograph near the house that Steichen rented at Mamaroneck, New York. Its soft focus relates to Steichen’s Tonalist-style paintings at the time. That winter Coburn joined the Photo-Secession and his photographs were featured in the first issue of Camera Work magazine. ProvenanceCharles Isaacs, Malvern, PA
