DescriptionAhudhya styleLabel TextThe heavily decorated crown and garments of this Buddha figure identify it as belonging to the late phase of Ayuthya Style. As followers of Theravada Buddhism--based on the teaching of the historical Buddha alone and unlike the dominant Mahayana school's speculative doctrines--they developed distinctive gestures for representing edifying moments in Sakyamuni Buddha's life. This figure holds his hands in the attitude of "appeasing the quarrel of the kinsmen." The crowning flame and lotus pedestal are cast separately from the figure.ProvenanceMrs. Ralph Morgan, Worcester, MA
