Label TextFunctional objects on the scholar's desk also served as objects of contemplation and discussion. The turquoise container is shaped like a boulder, with playful Buddhist lion-dogs (shi) symbolizing valor and energy. The lion-dog, posing on the lid with a paw on its cub, refers to a rebus conveying the wish that the son may follow in his father's footsteps and rise to the status of a high-ranking official (tai shi shao shi).
