It was his belief that each book had its own inherent spirit which he felt challenged to convey through choices of paper, typeface, illustrations, jacket and cover. New Praise of Fuji, published shortly after the end of WWII, conveys a longing to connect with classic Japanese aesthetics. In this work, Onchi complemented the naturalistic and playful verses about Mt. Fuji composed by his friend Maeda Yugure (1883-1951) with a sketch-like depiction in black ink on the book-jacket and two color woodblock-print views of the same mountain. The view exhibited here shows the lofty, snow-covered peak in the autumn season. The poems included on the right-hand page are listed under the title "car window view (shaso tembo)" mentioned on an earlier page. The first and third may be translated as: For a brief moment the whole surface of my framed vision, a field filled with horsetails as I face Mount Fuji without snow. When actually facing the real Mount Fuji, so much more than words can say, everything deepens, experiencing true joy.
