Label TextGlinn made his reputation as a wartime photojournalist for the Magnum Photo Agency. He went on to cover the cold war around the world. In Paris and New York, Glinn socialized with his many artist friends, and his snapshots provide insight into their storied circles.
This photograph records a gathering at painter Helen Frankenthaler’s studio-apartment in lower Manhattan. Apparently muddled by drink, the famously gruff sculptor David Smith—most comfortable in a casting pit—enjoys his friend’s attentions and that of her little dog. Smith died when his truck rolled over on road outside of Bennington, Vermont.
