Description"A view of the New Yoshiwara." Righthand sheet of a multi-sheet composition. Many people are shown coming in the quarter through the Omon-guchi, the great entrance gate. Just within, two of the gaudily bedecked women of the quarter are looking at a man who wears a black haori and a sukin to match, and who has his arm about the kamuro of one of the women.

Label TextThis is the label text for 1901.59.2334: Toyokuni presents a scene of the bustling life on Nakanocho, the main street at the entrance gate of the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters. It is the cherry blossom festival and in anticipation of the evening’s activities high-ranking courtesans with attendants are seen parading to greet important clients; geisha and servants are also hurrying to the houses of assignation to provide entertainment and food. A few businessmen, samurai and monks visiting the Yoshiwara try to hide their identities with black overcoats, head-coverings and fans.
