Label TextIsraels was born in Gröningen in northern Holland. His early ambition was to become a rabbi, but he met parental opposition. In 1844 he went to Amsterdam to become a pupil of painter Jan Krauseman. The Anxious Family is characteristic of Israels’ sensitive genre scenes. It was probably painted at Zandvoort, a fishing village where Israels spent the major part of his career. ProvenanceE.B. Greenshield Collection, Montreal R.C. and N.M. Vose, Boston MA
