Label TextKelly developed a simplified visual language when he was a GI Bill student in Paris after World War II. To counteract memories of war he wanted to refine favorite qualities from Henri Matisse's work. Yellow Over Black combines the organic with the structural. The vivid color and curvilinear shapes of flowers are distilled into contemplative abstraction. Kelly avoided complicating illusions of depth with the saturated hues and flat surfaces available through lithography.ProvenanceMr. and Mrs. John M Woolsey, Petersham, MAOn View
