Label TextProcaccini was born into a family of artists in Bologna. He moved to Milan about 1590 and began to work as a sculptor, turning to painting about 1600. He was strongly influenced early in his career by the Milanese master Cerano, whose style was a distinctive blend of later Mannerism and the new Baroque style. Typical of Cerano and his circle, this painting combines exaggerated emotion and immediate sensuous appeal. The detail of the executioner crushed by the broken wheel is virtually a trademark of this Milanese school.ProvenanceH. Shickman, New York, NY
