Label TextAndrea di Bartolo was the son of a painter with whom he sometimes collaborated. His style is not particularly distinctive so works have frequently been attributed to him without strong evidence. For this reason and because their condition is only fair, these panels are ascribed to him with some uncertainty. They represent a type of painting that was common in the fourteenth century: small vertical panels showing standing saints, which probably decorated the frames of large altarpieces. Both of these female figures show an elegance and grace that relates both to the Sienese tradition and to the International Gothic style. At the same time, however, the artist reflects an interest in firmly modeled, solid forms and a rather solemn expression.ProvenanceTheodore T. Ellis, Worcester MA
