Label TextComing from an unknown location, probably in the Pyrenees, this figure once stood flanked by engaged colonnettes, parts of which still remain on the piece. The compressed composition and the general weighty character of the piece are typical of the Romanesque period, as is the rigid austerity of the figure with its large, staring eyes and oversized hands raised in the so-called orans (praying) position. The highly linear treatment and decorative curve of the fold of the garment recall contemporary 12th-century manuscript illumination.ProvenanceTheodore Pitcairn, Bryn Athyn, PA, by 1945; sold to the Brummer Gallery, New York, January 9, 1945 [object inventory card no. N6205]; sold to the Worcester Art Museum, April 30, 1946.
