Label TextLorenzo Costa worked chiefly in Bologna until 1507 when he succeeded Mantegna as court painter at Mantua. He had many followers in Bologna. This picture was formerly attributed to Boltraffio, but this suggestion cannot be supported. The painting seems closer to portraits by Costa done at the Mantuan court.ProvenancePrivate collection of the Kings of Wurttemberg; Stuttgart sale of the property of King William II of Wurttemberg, Residenzschloss, lot 72, November 27-29, 1919 (as Luini); purchased by a dealer at Carlsruhe, 1919; Galerie Moos, Geneva, Switzerland, by 1926; purchased by Theodore T. Ellis, Worcester, MA, 1926 (as School of Leonardo da Vinci, Luini or Boltraffio); bequeathed to the Worcester Art Museum by Mary G. Ellis as part of the Theodore T. and Mary G.
