Label TextIllustration from vol. I of Ehon Tokiwagusa (A Picture Book of Evergreens); signed sakusha gako (author and conceiver) Bunkado Nishikawa Sukenobu (1671-1751); carvers Fujimura Zen'emon and Murakami Gen'emon of Osaka; preface dated 1730 (Kyoho 15); issued by Morita Shotaro of Osaka in the 8th month 1731 (Kyoho 16). This famous poetess of the eleventh century was a daughter Minamoto Yorimitsu. She married Oe Kinsuke, the daimyo of Sagami, whence the name by which she is known. She is here depicted seated in a room in her dwelling with a suzuri-bako (writing box) on the floor at her side and a brush and paper in her hands. She talks to another court lady standing close by.
