Label TextThis picture probably belongs to the artist's late phase (after 1675) when he painted similar domestic scenes; some are in interiors very like this one, and the same wicker cradle appears in other paintings that belong in the same group. In all of these genre scenes the figures become rather stiff and wooden, and the light loses its earlier warmth and glow. Characteristic for this period, too, are the large areas of shadow in the interior. Born in Rotterdam, De Hooch was living in Delft by 1652. By 1660–1 he settled in Amsterdam where he spent the rest of his life.ProvenanceJohn Levy Gallery, New York NY
