Label TextPieter van Bloemen, who was born and studied in Antwerp, arrived in Rome in 1684. This painting, which shows his interest in the Italian landscape, appears to have been painted around the time of his return to Antwerp in 1694. Van Bloemen was especially skilled at painting animals and frequently added them to the works of other artists. Here, as in many of his paintings, a white horse plays a major role. Set against a dark background and dramatically lighted, it is the centerpiece in a veritable still life of livestock.ProvenancePossibly in the Six Collection, Amsterdam, around 1825-1851; sale, Heilbron, Berlin, no. 8, September 20, 1913; Mr. and Mrs. Louis Holzer, Brno, Czechoslovakia; Walter G. and Margit E. Seidl, Worcester, MA, by 1983; bequeathed to the Museum, 1990.
