DescriptionThere may have been multiple stages of painting to judge by the buildup in some areas. There may once have been some gilding.
Label TextThe axiality and frontality of the pose and the simplified fall of the monk's drapery may be described as retrospectivaly gothic, but the costume and expression reflect early fifteenth century trends in realistic sculpture. It is not unlikely that this piece was orignally a freestanding devotional sculpture, though it could have been a mourning friar from a larger tomb program.
