Label TextThis case features a selection of objects highlighting artistic creativity across the region. Active in the mid-1700s, William Swan was the first known silversmith to set up shop in Worcester. The local demand for his finely crafted silver items was a sign that the town was flourishing following its establishment by English colonists in 1722. Founded in 1825 on Cape Cod, the Boston & Sandwich Glass Company became a major regional industry, especially after perfecting new mechanized technologies for pressing molten glass into molds. Such innovations made mass-produced decorative wares readily available to American consumers.
With its two potteries—Chelsea Keramic Art Works and Dedham Pottery Company—the Robertson family played a leading role in the American Arts and Crafts movement, a late 19th-century movement embracing high-quality, handcrafted objects in response to industrialization. Their ceramics were renowned for unique and experimental glazes.
