Label TextCatalan artist Pau Roig i Cisa was heavily influenced by turn-of-the-century French artist, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. Using an oblique perspective and decorative style, Roig i Cisa, like artists Georges Seurat and Pablo Picasso, attempted to document the modern spectacle of the circus. Focusing on animal acts in the ring, Roig i Cisa’s performers, interestingly turn away from the viewer. By emphasizing circularity and momentum, the spectator eagerly anticipates the return of the ponies and their riders.
