Label TextCunningham was a leading creative photographer in the West. In 1915 she married the etcher Roi Partridge (whom she later divorced) and moved from Seattle to the San Francisco Bay Area. By 1932 Cunningham was a founding member of the group f/64 which defined photography as “an art form of simple and direct presentation through purely photographic methods.” A masterful painter, Kahlo (1907–1954) concentrated on small, personal canvases, unlike her husband, the muralist Diego Rivera. Many are vivid self-portraits, combining elements of folk art and Surrealism in powerful, revealing statements of experience. ProvenancePurchase from Focus Gallery, 2146 Union Street, San Francisco, CA, under the National Endowment for the Arts Grant A40-20-404.
