Label TextRivera (1886–1957) was a leader of the Mexican Muralist Movement and husband of artist Frida Kahlo. His Communist ideals made him one of most controversial mid-century arists. The Museum of Modern Art in New York presented a retrospective of his work in 1931 and the following year he began a fresco series at the Detroit Institute of Arts. There he met Silberstein, a Cincinnati photojournalist.
Silberstein built an international reputation through photography assignments with outlets like National Geographic, The New York Times, and Time. He also became a regional Cincinnati celebrity in the 1950s for his weekly photography lectures on WLWT (Channel 5) television.
