Label TextA visit to the Netherlands in 1847 introduced Troyon to the work of 17th-century Dutch painters, like Aelbert Cuyp, Adriaen van de Velde, and Paulus Potter. Their landscape compositions were often populated with domesticated animals as well as peasants going about their daily activities. Upon Troyon’s return to France, he began to integrate such elements into his paintings. His extraordinary capacity to capture the nuance of light—here, filtered through the cloudy sky and the leaves of the apple trees—won his work admiration among the impressionists.Provenancesold by Charles Sedelmeyer (?) to Charlotte E.W.
