Label TextGuardi exists beside Canaletto as the great 18th-century veduta or view painter of Venice. His work is divided between scenes in Venice itself and imaginary views of the surrounding countryside. This painting, for which several studies exist, is completely a product of the artist's imagination. His characteristically sketchy brushwork and unrivaled feeling for light and its effect on a landscape are easily recognizable. ProvenanceJudge and Mrs. John M. Woolsey, New York and Petersham
