Label TextThis portrayal of an apostle exhibits a complex combination of metal engraving and glass enameling. Its brilliant color is achieved by the champleve technique in which glass powders are fused at high temperatures into grooves in a copper plate. The scrollwork that fills the gilt surfaced background is delicately engraved. Several of the lines describing the apostle's face and the finial above his head have been enhanced with niello paste.ProvenanceJoseph Brummer
