Label TextAt least thirteen variants of this picture are attributed to Brekelenkam. This one, signed and dated 1653, is the earliest existing dated version of the theme. Brekelenkam also painted still lifes; perhaps the still life painting within the painting is after one of his own pictures. The earliest document on Brekelenkam is dated 1648, when he and a number of other artists banded together to form the Leiden Guild of St. Luke. Brekelenkam remained active in Leiden until his death.ProvenanceEhrich Galleries, New York NY
