Label TextIn 1623 Büsinck came to Paris to work with the painter Georges Lallemand, who had special presses built to print chiaroscuro woodcuts. Then new in France, chiaroscuro woodcuts duplicated the look of ink drawings made on toned paper, and had been made in Germany and Italy the century before. This work, printed from three blocks, is a tour de force in the artist's printmaking career. The largest of all of his chiaroscuro prints, this work is after Lallemand's drawing of Moses with the Ten Commandments. During his career Büsinck made twenty-four chiaroscuro woodcuts, and he is credited with bringing the medium to France.ProvenancePurchased from James Bergquist, Boston, MA
