Label TextThe human face, reduced to its essentials, has been a source of inspiration for Cambridge-based painter, Todd McKie, since the 1970s. His anonymous characters, created from flat and simplified forms, are witty and humorous descendants of modernist abstraction (from Picasso’s cubism to Miro’s biomorphism and Matisse’s cutouts). McKie amplifies his imagery with equally clever titles. The three paintings on view span 27 years and, while similarly scaled, offer an opportunity to see how McKie works in two different media and supports – watercolor on paper and flashe (a synthetic vinyl) on canvas.ProvenanceSidney Rose, Worcester, MA
