Label TextAllan Ramsay, son of a Scottish poet of the same name, studied in Edinburgh, London and Rome. Settling in London in 1739, he became the recipient of numerous portrait commissions, especially among the upper class. In 1761 he received the highest recognition of his talent, being made Principle Painter to the Court of George III.
This portrait, signed and dated 1740, was painted shortly after Ramsay’s first trip to Italy (1736-1738). [or] This portrait, signed and dated 1748, was painted a decade after Ramsay’s first trip to Italy (1736-1738). Its informal yet graceful and elegant quality, representative of continental influences, marks a definite advancement in British portraiture, which up to this time had been quite provincial.
