DescriptionAM/3/A-E Inscribed in graphite l.l., "f 2814." Stamped in black ink, l.l., "A.B. DAVIES/V.M.D./ESTATE."Label TextDavies was a magazine illustrator when he first visited Europe in the mid-1890s. He was inspired by ruins of ancient Pompeiian frescoes representing uninhibited nudes in lush gardens. Paintings by Pierre Puvis de Chavannes impelled Davies to create a personal Symbolist vision. His later enthusiasm for Isadora Duncan, the American doyenne of modern dance, invigorated his idyll of aesthetic life in an ancient time.ProvenanceA.B. Davies; Virginia Merriweather Davies;
