Label TextThis painting, probably painted about 1650, is signed on the paper on the wall to the left. Views of simple people pursuing everyday activities were common at this time. In presenting his peasant subjects, Sorgh, like his contemporaries, often incorporates a note of humor and condescension, which suggests that the market for such pictures was often the wealthier class. Sorgh specialized in peasant interiors and market scenes. A native of Rotterdam, he is said to have been a pupil of David Teniers.Provenanceappears in inventry from P & D Colnaghi Galleries, no date, p. 14.; Ehrich Galleries, New York NY, sold to the Worcester Art Museum, March 28, 1913.
