Label TextMesdag began a career in his family’s banking firm, but abandoned that profession at the age of thirty-five to develop his artistic talents. He studied art in Brussels and settling at The Hague in 1869, established his reputation as a painter. He was later to win the Gold Medal of the Paris Salon. Mesdag is particularly noted as a painter of marine scenes, the sea being a favorite subject throughout his painting career. The Departure of Fishing Boats from Scheveningen is a work strong and clear in conception. The faces and figures of the fishermen are partially rendered, as the focus of attention is held by the strong lines of the ship’s masts and sails, against the turbulent sea. ProvenanceJoseph L. Tuckerman, Newport, RI
