Label TextOne of the great pioneers of American modernism, O’Keeffe began exploring abstraction as early as the 1910s and ‘20s. She developed an intuitive, personal style based largely on the simplification of natural forms in carefully chosen terrain. The Southwest—whether its landscape, flora, or architecture—featured prominently in her work. Blue Sky likely depicts natural columns formed from volcanic ash in White Place, New Mexico, flanking a cloudless sky. While the rocks’ detail is recorded faithfully, the sky’s flat plane and overall lack of scale make the subject enigmatic.ProvenanceEdith Halpert of Downtown Gallery, New York, to Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Stoddard, 1961/1962. Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Stoddard, Worcester, MA to Worcester Art Museum, 1981.
