Label TextDiaz was a leading painter of the Barbizon School. For over thirty years before the war of 1870, he derived his inspiration from nature in the Forest of Fontainebleau. He cast his forest scenes in the hues of summer and autumn. Details of a summer landscape were blocked in rapidly in this picture while the graceful figure, bathed in light, was carefully delineated and painted. Diaz established a reputation for such paintings, portraying nymphs, goddesses, and idealized women. ProvenanceMrs. Howard W. Preston, Cranston RI
