Label TextAlthough the exact meaning of the painting is not entirely clear, the subject probably illustrates a parable in which two views of nature are contrasted: the benign and the malignant. Most of the animals appear in pairs blissfully unaware of the predatory acts occurring within their midst. The general mood is peaceable. This painting is related in subject, style and date to a group of Deccani paintings with similar subjects. Paintings of this type, which employ large areas of uncolored paper as a "background" tint, are a particular, yet uncommon, feature of Indian painting. They are found in all the major schools of Indian painting.ProvenanceTerence McInerney, New York NY
