Label TextThough Schilling made his living etching other artists’ designs, he was also a painter and an extraordinary draftsman. He began as a commercial artist in Chicago, and in 1885 moved to New York. When the artist began to travel to Europe in the late 1880s he learned the process of producing color sketches in the field, and later painting from them in the studio. The landscape sketches became his best known works. Fellow artists marveled at their mood and atmosphere.ProvenanceDr. William B. Dunning CollectionOn View
