Label TextThis grand seascape may be unique in Robert's work. It was probably inspired by the canvases of his friend Joseph Vernet, who specialized in this type of dramatic composition. The painting was executed as part of a large decorative cycle for a chateau in Alsace and was commissioned by the Baron de Waldner. A preliminary drawing showing the shipwrecked vessel has been found in an album of Robert's drawings in the Louvre.Provenancepainted for Baron de Waldner, Chateau de Levis; C Morland Agnew; R. Langton Douglas purchaser at Christie's July 9, 1926 for Mr. Theodore T. Ellis; Gift of Theodore T. Ellis to Worcester Art Museum, November 28, 1927.
