Label TextThis portrait may have been painted to mark the marriage of Newport, Rhode Island resident Jeremiah Greene. It shows a prosperous, well-fed, and eminently satisfied man in a splendid blue satin coat, sporting an elaborate scarlet vest with fine gold trim and cloth-covered buttons. Besides these sartorial details, Robert Feke conveys a vivid sense of Jeremiah Greene’s physical presence through his slightly larger left eye and suggestion of a smile or grimace in his left cheek. Robert Feke was born and raised on Long Island, but is associated with Philadelphia, Boston, and Newport, where he worked as a portraitist. The first successful native-born artist in Colonial America, he avidly responded to the influence of foreign imports such as John Smibert, whose works he emulated and adapted to his own use.ProvenanceHirschl & Adler Galleries, Inc., New York, NY
