Label TextThe son of a Parisian cabinetmaker, Lachaise enjoyed an academic art education, and exhibited his sculpture annually at the Salon. In 1902, he met Isabel Dutaud Nagle, an American ten years his senior, who became his chief inspiration. He followed her to Boston and they were married in 1917. Lachaise became a critical figure in bringing Modernist sculpture to America. In 1935, the Museum of Modern Art presented a retrospective exhibition of his sculpture, its first for a living artist.ProvenanceMrs. Helen Sagoff Slosberg, Boston, MAOn View
