Label TextJan Mostaert was born in Haarlem and was active there and in Malines, at the court of Margaret of Austria. His early work shows the influence of the painter Geertgen tot St. Jans, but their relationship has been insufficiently studied. His portraits are characterized by the careful posing and serious demeanor of the sitters and by background landscapes enlivened by narrative detail. This painting has suffered a good deal of damage and has been extensively retouched so that the image is not as it was when painted. The best preserved parts, such as the landscape to the right of the sitter, do show Mostaert's own hand, however, and the painting can be judged as his in spite of its condition.ProvenanceMax Rothschild, London England
