Label TextVan Goyen was chiefly a landscape painter, and his work includes scenes from many parts of The Netherlands. After 1626 he evolved a new method of depicting landscapes, reducing the number of colors in his palette and relying on changes of value within a few colors to suggest atmospheric effects. This painting, signed with a monogram and dated 1652, is one of a series of oil sketches which Van Goyen made early in the 1650s. They are fresh and lively scenes that illustrate his distinctive style. This one captures a feeling of space and atmosphere in a very limited range of color.ProvenanceP. de Boer, Amsterdam Holland; formerly in the collection of Fritz and Louise Gutmann
