DescriptionWoman holding a musical instrument with a deer. Indian writing on back.Label TextTodi Ragini represents passionately the feelings of a young, unmarried girl. The mood is tender, lovely, and also sad. The ragini is represented as a young woman carrying a lute (vina) with a deer looking longingly up at her. The branches of the tree in the background correspond to the melody pattern. These are conventional elements in depicting the Todi Ragini and are repeated y the nineteenth-century artist. The palette used in lieu of the somber richness of the traditional Malwa palette represents new stylistic influences on the painter.ProvenanceMrs. Frank E. Heywood, Worcester MA
