Label Text2006-06-06: Cranes, Deer and Lingzhi Fungus under a Pine Tree Nephrite; 20th century Gift of Maria and John Dirlam, 1999.435 The symbolism makes this work an ideal marriage gift. The combined motifs of a pine (song) and cranes (he), one holding a fungus of immortality in its beak, express a wish for a couple to have a long and happy life (song he tong chun). The deer symbolizes successful scholarship, promotion and a good income since the word for deer, lu, is a homophone for the salary of a Chinese official.
