DescriptionWhite nephrite with greenish cast.Label Text2006-03-04: Boulder with Mountain Scenes: Two Deer on a Path Nephrite; Qing dynasty (1644 - 1911), late 18th - early 19th century Gift of Maria and John Dirlam, 1997.137 Jade boulders and stones such as lapis lazuli evoked the "jewel-like" realms of Taoist immortals. They also embodied the pure, permanent essence and hues of the mountains and streams that Chinese landscape painters had long strived to capture. The nephrite boulder depicts two deer on a mountain path. The lighter area on the top of the stone and the wispy clouds in low relief suggest a slightly hazy, moonlit night. On the reverse side the God of Longevity Shou-lao (or Shou-xing), recognized by his staff and high forehead, is depicted walking along a river toward a pavilion. He holds a peach of immortality and an assistant holds a fungus of immortality.ProvenanceJohn and Maria Dirlam
