Several 20th century Indian artists, including Haren Das, created images that were pictorial, documentary and uplifting in spirit. This print depicts a village in a world where the old and new co-exist harmoniously. Along the river we see ancient temples and modern structures, an old-fashioned sailing vessel and an airplane. In the foreground is a bird's-eye-view of an idyllic scene in which farmers and craftsmen (potter, weaver, blacksmith, well-builders and carpenter) sustain village life by practicing crafts in traditional ways.
